The past two days in Rochester have been the busiest spot news days I can recall in months. Among the activity, we’ve had two water rescues; both daring and precarious, both successful, though one still potentially tragic. In the first, a family was rescued from a cave along the Rochester flooding with storm water. Everyone emerged safe and sound. From the second, two children are still in guarded condition having been pulled from the Erie Canal. Their mother is now asking for prayers for one of the children, a daughter, who clings to life. These two images capture the emotions of the people touched by each incident. As photojournalists we have the responsibility to cover the news from these fast paced scenes. Most of the time, we miss the action —- we arrive later, or our lenses are obstructed in some way. But in the aftermath, the experience is etched on the faces those involved. Capturing that raw emotion sometimes can be more powerful than the actual moment a person is rescued. Both of these heroes won’t forget what they went trough. I hope our images convey a glimpse of what they experienced.
