The Mayor - 05/03/2010 - photo by Will Yurman
Most of the photos we take for the paper are what are called a ‘quick read’ - clean, simple composition designed to be immediately grasped, and hopefully appreciated.
What I like about this photo are the layers and the complexity. I was photographing Rochester Mayor Robert Duffy giving his state of the city address Monday night at the Memorial Art Gallery.
I photographed the end of his talk from the balcony, and when he finished and walked off the stage he was briefly silhouetted in front of the slides he had been using in his speech.
You see him, small in the corner of the frame, the crowd, standing and applauding, is partially obscured by people standing in front of me in the balcony, and the now empty podium is in the top left corner. Mix in a variety of different kinds of lights, creating different colors throughout and you have a photo that can take a few seconds to fully ‘get’ - hopefully worth the effort.
